MCR8017 EC Historical Geography of the Ancient Greek World*

The physical geography of the Aegean Basin and its part in the shaping of the economic, social and political development of ancient Greek civilisation. Methods and sources for the reconstruction of the ancient geographical environment – ancient geography, narrative sources, data from the archaeological excavations. Land, climate, and population in ancient Greece. The organisation of the public and private space in the Greek cities (Agora, public buildings for the Boule and the popular Assembly, Gymnasia, Theatres). The expansion of Greek civilisation through colonisation and trade from the Hellenistic to the Roman period. Regional and international land and sea roads, during the same periods.
